Scar Chapter: 3 Children of Armagedon --------------------------------------------------------------- "Are you coming? Going slowly. Gathering power aren't you. And why that boy? Your heart's gone soft Christian. You'll never reach your full potential that way." Christian sneezed. "Someone's thinking about me." He said as he rode on his horse with Ryomaru clinging to his back. For months Christian has been travelling to the south. On the horizon a city was beginning to emerge. "Wow look at those buildings. They're not like anything I've ever seen." Said Ryomaru wide eyed. "Those buildings are very old Ryomaru. Gothic architecture is beutiful isn't it. What you're looking at is Vatican city." Said Christian. Ryomaru smiled with joy "That's where you said we were going. We made it!" "This is one point along my journey." "What do you mean?" "Ryomaru I'm going all around the world. Some people whom have met me already know this. You've heard of Kagesenin. Well I'm called Hikarisenin." "So that's why you're so strong. You're like the chaos bringer...are you the same kind of demon?" "No Kagesenin isn't a demon and neither am I. He's a man named Malus. Someone I knew a long time ago. Before he was the chaos bringer. Before he was the man who's fists crushed the world. Before all that....he was my freind." Ryomaru went silent for a moment before he could bring himself to ask Christian his next question. "Do you know why he destroyed the wrold?" "I know why....because I am a coward. If I had faced him back then five years ago things would have been different. He would have had the satisfaction of knowing who the stronges was. He wouldn't have pushed himself like he did." Christian answered. "I....don't understand." "Six years ago I defeated him in the final round of the world martial arts championship. I put a scar on his spirit with my blow. He said his power would grow untill that scar was healed. I know that the only way to heal it is with my blood. He won't rest untill he's paid me back." "So that's why...But how did he destroy the world five years ago?" "The next years world martial arts tournament. I was afraid. I wasn't afraid of being beaten by him even though he was surely stronger. I was afraid of the confrontation. He was my friend after all. He said he would find a move to counter my Hikarisenpo and he did. He called it the black hole gun. But it was too powerful. He used it in haste and it consumed the city in which the tournament was held. Washington. He leveled it. There was an automotaic nuclear response to all of America's current targets. And in turn all nuclear nations fired in kind. The result was the collapse of most nations. But that was only the start. So long as Malus builds his dark power the people live in fear. The angry souls of those he damned have pushed nature into turmoil. Untill I settle this the world can't be rebuilt." As Christian's story came to an end their horse entered the streets of vatican city. Christian dismounted and began to guid his horse ,whom he had aptly named Chessnut, by the reigns. Ryomaru dismounted and stared up at Christian's eyes those showed his honesty. "You're not going to die too are you?" Christian was silent for a moment. "Malus is very strong. He's like a dark god. I don't know if I can defeat him. That's why I'm traveling. I'm trying to grow stronger. I'm circling the world drawing strength. Mabey..." "CHRISTIAN YOU DIDN'T ANSWER MY QUESTION!" Ryomaru yelled. Christian abruptly halted his explaination and turned his face away from Ryomaru trying to stop him from looking into his eyes." "I...I won't die Ryomaru." Christian silently begean to continue his walk into the city before another voice stopped him. "Kid he's lying to you." Christian turned around to see who had addressed Ryomaru with such harshe words. "WHO ARE YOU TO MAKE SUCH AN ACCUSATION!" Christian found himself face to face with a young man probably still in his teens dressed in a black leather jacket wearing black fingerless gloves and a head sprouting black hair contrasting sharply with his pale face. THe style was too familliar. "I know you're lying Christian, because no man on earth is stronger than Malus." He said. "You know both of us by name." Christian replied. "Of course. He talks about you a lot you know." "how do you know Malus?" "I should know. I'm his student. My name's Ryu. It means Dragon." "I know what your name means. And what's it matter. Ryomaru here has a name meaning the same thing. You're overestimating yourself." Ryu grinned. "How do you expect to beat the master of Kagesen when you can't even defeat a student." Christian clenched his fist. "This is a holy place. Don't bring a fight here." Christian replied. "YEAH GO AWAY!" Ryomaru shouted to Ryu. Ryu looked down to Ryomaru. "Little dragon don't don't overstep your limits." Ryu then looked back up to Christian. "White like a crane. Cranes are graceful and beuitiful but they cower when when a dragon threatens to swollow them." Christian's brow lowered in what seemed frustration and annoyance. "Pathetic. You self indlulgent gothboy. The type that sits in the rain writing bad poetry while you worry that your makeup is running. You have no idea what the world is really like. Don't give me your weak psuedo-phillosphy." Christians comments stung Ryu who stood dumbfounded as Christian turned and walked away. Ryomaru turned back to Ryu. "Yeah and don't tell us anymore lies you big jerk." He said before following Christian. As they walked down the street leaving Ryu behind Ryomaru looked to Christian and asked "He is lying right Christian? No onebody's stronger than you right?" Christian shook his head and looked down to his feet, which slowly paced forward, as he answered Ryomaru's question. "Malus is stronger than I. Much stronger. He's as far beyond me as I am beyond any other man you've ever met." "But...if you're going to fight Malus that means you'll lose....it means....you'll die...Are you... ...are you g..goin to leave me too?" Christian's walking stopped. The streets were oddly empty leaving them so quiet that Ryomaru's whimper echoed down the alleys. "Ryomaru I'm sorry. I know I'll become even stronger than I am now. Stronger than any being you've ever known. But I don't know if I can become as strong as Malus. I'll try Ryomaru. I'll make sure that you aren't left alone in the world again." Ryomaru's voice steddied as he replied. "Christian... ...I trust you. If you say that you won't die I'll believe you." As the pair of travelers rounded a street corner they discovered why the outer streets seemed so deserted. They looked don the inner streets to see what must have been the vast majoritiy of the citie's population gathered toegether. Some were singing hymns others chanting prayers. Christian puzzled over the goings on for a moment. Jumping up Christian landed on a second floor balcony to get a topdown view. What he saw was a lengthy line of people advancing ever so slowly toward one goal. Gazing out even further to the center of the comotion Christian could see the cause of it all. A number of cardinals were gathered around one man. Surprizingly a fairly young man for the position christian assumed him to be in. Christian made a quick hop back down landing next to Ryomaru. "Come on Ryomaru it looks like all the answers just fell into my lap." Christian said smiling as he stepped toward the rear of the line. "What were you looking for?" Ryomaru asked. "It seems the pope himself is out in public. I'm not sure why but it's conveniant." Christian replied. A young woman in the back of the line holding an infant in her arms turned to Christian and kindly answered. "The new pope was just declared last week. In celebration he's blessing every child that will come here. I'm here for my son here. We're going to need all of God's good fortune we can get without his father." Chistian looked to the child in the woman's arms. "did his father run out on you?" The woman shook her head and replied. "No he died. He was a proffessional soldier. I heard that he died somewhere in northern Germany." Those words hit christian like a well thrown brick. A bitter pennance for a sin he thought so necessary to commit. But never could he let the truth come free. "I'm sorry for your loss maam." Christian replied. Christian dug into his pocket pulling out a fistfull of platinum coins the "change" of his previously aquired gold bar. He thrust his handfull of money in front of the young mother. "This should help you to get back on your feet miss." The mother shook her head again. "No I won't accept charity. I don't want to raise my son in a world where he can't stand on his own two feet. Please take this back." Christian turned his back. "It's not charity miss. It's pennance." The mother looked down at Ryomaru then back at christian. "You're too young to be his father. That boy is another charity case of yours. You're one of those people who think they owe something to the world. You're trying to make up for some past sin with good works. Is that it?" "Miss you've read my mind." "But you don't need to do that. Helping people is all well and good but you shouldn't feel that it's your key to salvation. God forgives." Christian looked over his shoulder suddenly distracted from the conversation. "Miss if you won't accept my money as charity then consider it as a payment for a favor." "What kind of favor?" "This boy here. Keep him in line with you. I've got something to do right now. I'll be right back." Ryomaru had already begun to protest. "No I'll come with you." He said. "Ryomaru not this time." "But you wont' come back. I know it. It always happens that way.." Christian cut Ryomaru off. "I SAID NO! Ryomaru I now you don't want to be alone in the world but sometimes I"m going to have to leave your side. But I will come back. At your age you should be able to comprehend that when someone leaves they will come back." "But...." "No buts Ryomaru. You need to be strong. You can't always cling to my side. I said I'll come back and that's what I'm going to do. Have I ever lied to you before?" Christian said sternly. Ryomaru hesitated a moment. "No you never lied to me." "And I never will. I said I'll come back and I will. This lady will watch over you. I'll be back in time to meet the Pope with you." Christian turned and pushed his way through the line that had already formed behind him. Christian walked slowly into a nearby back alley. "Ryu I told you not to bring a fight here. This city is a holy place." Ryu stepped forward into view. "I'm surprized. since this is a holy place as you said wouldn't your power be increased by it. It's a basis of Hikarisen isn't it. Just like Malus's energy will increase during chaotic events like violent storms. So why be afraid to fight with an advantage?" "Because I won't defile God's homelands with combat." Christian answered. "How pathetic. Then let's take it outside. You can fight me outside the city." "Why shoudl I bother with you? You aren't worth my time." "Don't you know that Malus has been keeping tabs on you. He sent me to gauge your power. He knows that while he pushed himself to the edge for five years you've been hiding away. It's no wonder you're afraid of him." Christian snapped back at Ryu. "I'm not afriad of him. And I don't need to offer you and excuses or explainations. Now why don't you answer my question. Why should I bother to fight you." Ryu smirked "The little dragon.......... ...... All I need to do is think it and he dies." "WHAT!" Christian exclaimed. "Look in my eyes Hikarisenin. You know I'm speaking the truth." Ryu said. "You wouldn't. Mabey you can but Malus doesn't have a heart that black." Christian retorted. "Mabey he doesn't but I do. Cold and black as the harshest winter night." Ryu replied as his eyes narrowed and his smirk widened. "If I fight you. No matter the outcome Ryomaru will be safe. SWEAR IT!" "I swear it." Back in line Ryomaru sneezed. The child carrying woman giggled. "Someone must be talking about you." "Oh it uhm... looks like it's my turn. Why don't you go ahead." "Oh I couldn't" Ryomaru replied. "It's alright go on. I'll be right behind you." Ryomaru stepped ahead. It seemed as if the world watched as he slowly stepped up onto the stage. He wondered if anyone was scowling at his ragged clothes or dirt smudged face, but as he looked ahead he felt oddly comforted. Ryomaru looked toward the man no more than thirty dressed in the robes of his the highest of all offices. "Where are your parents my son?" He said with a kind soft voice. "T...they're gone sir." A bodygaurd nearby kneeled down and to Ryomaru "You should reffer to the Pope as you're emminance. When speaking to him." The Pope looked to his bodygaurd and waved him aside. "Let the boy speak as he wishes." Ryomaru smiled with the Pope's reassurance. Leaning forward the Pope placed a hand on each side of Ryomaru's head and chanted a prayer in latin. "God blesses you child." Ryomaru before leaving looked back behind himself. He found a father and two daughters behind him but the baby carrying woman was nowhere to be found. Moments later Ryomaru walked away from the crowd and sat on the steps of the nearest building hopefully near enough to where he and Christian had parted for him to be found again. Placing his elbows on his knees and chin in his hands Ryomaru signed. "What's the matter?" Said a high pitched voice. Ryomaru looked to its source and found he was being address by a young girl about five years older than himself. She looked japanese like Ryomaru did. Her hair was long streight and black while she wore a short dress the legnth of which was made unimportant by tights that fell short at the legs and arms and all was the same color as her raven hair. Ryomaru answered her question. "I'm waiting for someone but I'm scared that he won't come back." "I'm waiting for someone too. My big brother." The girl responded. "You think he'll come back?" Ryomaru asked. The girl giggled at Ryomaru's comment. "Of course silly. People don't just leave and never come back." The girl realizing the sting of her comment looked at Ryomaru's solemn expression. "Oh...You're really afraid he's not gonna come back aren't you?" "He said he'd come back but that's what everyone said. But he's not like other people but still..." "Have confidence. Look my name's Tora. Why don't we wait together?" Ryomaru looked up at Tora. "Okay...My name's Ryomaru." As soon as Ryomaru had introduced himself a clap of thunder sounded. Tora looked up at it. "Uh oh. It's started. Come on I know a place we can go." Tora said as she took Ryomaru by the wrist pulling him away with her while the rain began to pour down. Meanwhile outside the city Christian stood face to face with Ryu. "Malus has sent me this storm. His dark energy creates these storms and tehir chaotic power grows stronger empowering any user of the Kagesen. Of course this will probably saverely weaken you without the sun. Sthrength feeds on strength and grows stronger and stronger." Ryu said raising his hands pulling in power from the black sky. Christian thrust his boken into the ground and clenched both fists. The shout of the first attack went out starting the battle. "KAGEHA!" Yelled Ryu hurling a ball of energy toward Christian. Christian put his palms forward and conceptrated his energy shielding himself from the attack. The force of the blast sent a gush of air past Christian causing the rain to blow horizontal for a moment under the force before returning to its normal downpour. "That was the most basic attack that Malus had. So how much more has he tought Ryu." Christian thought for a moment before he launched his counter. Rushing in Christian bombarded Ryu with a flurry of streight punches pounding on Ryu as if he were ore upon a blacksmith's anvil. A hard cross punch across the jaw topped off Christian's combination attack and sent Ruy Reeling to the ground. Christian stood over the toppled Ryu. "Malus may be the most powerful man in the world but aparently he's a lousy teacher." Ruy pulled himsef back up and spat out a mouthfull of blood. "I'm not done yet." he said as he took a battle stance. Ryu lept toward Christian and launched a spinning kick at his temple. Christians hands shot up catching Ryu's leg in mid attack. With a quick duck and turn Christian upset Ruy's balance sending him into an arial spin. Before Ruy could even hit the ground Christian planted his knee into Ryu's stomach then let him drop to the ground once again. "ready to give up?" Christian asked. Ryu once again pulled himself up. "I'm not even close to being out of moves." he replied spitefully. "Give up. It doesn't matter what move you've got you won't hold out." Christian said in stern and honest warning. "NO!!! I AM THE STUDENT OF MALUS THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD!!!" In his anger Ryu began drawing more and more energy. The storm clouds began swirling in the sky above him and lighting shot down striking the land. "NOW LET'S SEE YO DEAL WITH THIS! KAGEKEN!!!!!" Christian recognized the tecnnique right off. Ruy's muscles bulged and his body glowed with the exess of energy. Ryu now didn't bother to talk. In fact he couldn't with all of his concentration and enrgy going into his fighting power. Even his eyes clouded with a purple glow. Christian realizing he'd have to defeat Ryu quickly Attacked hoping he hadn't reached full power yet. Throwing a hard forward kick Christian attacked. Ryu's hands moved to intercept and an explosion of energy issued fourth from the collion of the two super powers sending both combatants hurtling back. As he tumbled through the air Ryu uprighted himself and found a good opening to attack. He landed on both feet already preparing an attack. He balled his right hand into a fist then pointed up his first two fingers. Floating above was a ball of highly concetnrated energy which continued to grow. Christian having also landed was already charging in with a fist full of power. As Christian and Ryu met face to face Ryu released his attack shouting "SHOKUKAKEN!" Directly in front of Christian. The result was an enormous explosion in which Christian's figure was lost. From the force of his own attack Ryu toppled back and landed on his back. He shook his head and opened his eyes to the dark sky and something surprizing. Christian was high in the air aparently having jumped over Ryu's attack at the last moment. Christian hung in the air for a moment as his momentum died then his descent began. On the fall Christian turned himself head down and put his still charged fist forward. Ryu on closer examination realized that Christian's fist was headed directly for him. Rolling back quickly Ryu managed to dodge Christians fist which instead smashed into the ground sending chunks of soil up above the heads of both combatants. As Christian pulled his fist free Ryu was rushing in. A rising kick caught Christian off guard and sent him into a full involuntary backflip landing him flat on his back. Ryu lept up above Christian and pointed both feet down preparing for a massive stomp. Christian raised his own feet into the air meeting Ryu's own. A shockwave tore up the ground around the two fighters as their feet collided. With an extra push Christian put Ryu back into the air. Throwing humpself forward Christian uprighted himself then prepared his fist with a mass of energy. Ryu prepared an attack of his own. "KAGEHAME...." as Christian readied his. "HIKARIU..." Ryu released a solid beam of dark energy down at Christian while at the same time propelling himself even further upward. "HA!!!!!!" Christian sidestepped one step and launched himself into the air spinning like a drill with his charged fist pointing forward. "KEN!" Ryu's "Kagehameha attack continued to pour down and he shifted it to the side sweeping across the ground and attempting to chase christian whom seemed to be able to move under his own power even in mid air dodging the shifting beam. After a long rise Christian arrived at his target and delivered his uppercut to Ryu's torso. The collison sent out a flash of light signifying a successful impact. The momentum change sent Ryu still further into the air. So high in fact Christian would have wondered if he were visible from the city had he not been focusing on bracing himself for a hard landing with the momentum having sent him down with a great deal of force. Christian landed hard and held still for a moment recovering from the shock. He then streightened his stance and shook each leg making sure he had no serious injuries. Almost a full minute later Ryu hit the ground behind Christian. Christian walked to his fallen enemy. Checking Ryu's condition he found him immobile but breathing. Christian gave Ryu a nudge with his foot stirring him back to conciousness. "You've lost Ryu. tell Malus that he needs to train you harder." "How did you...." Ryu muttered. "Malus showed me that move. I happen to have my own version called the Hikariken. Not as strong as the one Malus has but I certainly didn't need to use it. I know the flaw in the Kageken tecnique. It grants the user amazing power but it's lifespan is limited to only a few moves after which you'll find your reserves are completely emptied." As christian began to walk away Ryu spoke to him once again. "I'm not as good as Malus you know. I made the mistake but in his own tecnique he fixed that flaw. You'll find that when he uses the Kageken he has elliminated the side effect. And he happens to have a new technique even stronger than that. So don't think you're the better. He would still crush you." "Stop talking Ryu. You've been defeated. It's pointless to talk now." "But you know that I'm telling the truth. You admit that you're afraid of him." Christian turned his back on Ryu again and went on his way but as he did he answered Ryu one more time. "I was scared all these years. And I am still afraid to fight him. But it is not Malus that I fear." Ryu was left alone and he stared to the sky. "So you're safe for now little dragon. But dragons should walk alone. They needn't follow pitifule cranes." Back in Vatican city the rain poured down and The Pope's blessing ceramony had moved indoors. Elsewhere a small boy even younger than Ryomaru by at around three years stood in the rain staring at the sky. He stood on the steps of an old abandoned chapel. A small one by the standards of this city that the people had forgotten. Up the steps aproached Tora with Ryomaru in tow. She looked with shock at the small boy and ran ahead of Ryomaru to meet him. "Shiro why are you just standing in the rain you're going to get sick." She said scolding the boy. The boy Tora had called shiro ,whom had long silver hair and was clad in odd robes, replied to her without changing his stare. "God is crying again." Tora shook her head and pulled Shiro inside the doors of the old chapel and waved for Ryomaru to follow. Once inside and out of the wind and rain Tora introduced the two boys. "Shiro this is Ryomaru. He'll be staying here for a little while until the person he's waiting for gets here. And Ryomaru this is Shiro." "Is he your little brother?" Ryomaru asked. "No I just take care of him. Just like how my big brother takes care of me and his teacher takes care of him." Tora replied. "Oh so you're sort of like a familly." Ryomaru replied. "Yeah I guess so. Shiro was just a baby when me and my brother met him. He was with our teacher already. But teacher doesn't like to talk about how he found Shiro. But he says there's something very special about him." Tora explained before whispering into Ryomaru's ear. "Personally I think he's just wierd." Ryomaru stepped in front of Shiro and extended his hand in friendship. "Hi." The two boys shook hands in introduction. "You seem familliar. Do I know you?" Asked Ryomaru perplexed by the feeling that was brought up by Shiro's presence. Shiro walked further into the chapel followed by Tora and Ryomaru. In one corner they gathered where a collection of torches burned. Ryomaru was quick to aproach one for warmth. "We're all soaked from the rain Shiro. You stay here with Ryomaru I'll go down to the basement and get some of the spare robes so we can get into something dry." Said Tora. "It's really cold down there Tora. Are you sure?" Shiro replied. "I'm used to it. But if I don't you two will be a lot colder. So just wait here for me. And Ryomaru don't worry I'll be back." Toray answered. Ryomaru turned to Shiro. "So you don't like the cold either huh." "I hate cold. But Tora's big brother likes it and I think Tora's starting to be that way too. Just like teacher." Shiro answered. "How could anyone like the cold?" "They say it's because teacher is like ice inside." Moments later Tora returned clad now in a white robe and was carrying two more. The two boys hastily changed into the much warmer and dry garments before continuing their conversation. "So why didn't you go inside when it started raining Shiro?" Asked Ryomaru. "Because God is crying. I wanted to know why he was sad." "It rains everywhere now." Commented Ryomaru thinking of how most places he went he always saw an overcast sky. "It always rains. God must be very sad." Shiro said as he looked through the nearest window that wasn't of stained glass. The conversation was broken by a knocking at the door. Through the doorway stepped Christian calling Ryomaru's name. "hey there you are. I had a feeling I'd find you here." Christian said as he approached Ryomaru. "Well that's a new look." Christian commented pointing out Ryomaru's garb. "Hey they gave it to me." Ryomaru said pointing behind himself. "Who?" Christian asked. Perplexed by Christians question Ryomaru turned around to see no one present. "Where'd they go?" "Did you make some friends while I was gone?" Christian asked. "Yeah they were just here a minute ago." "Sorry you won't get a chance to say goodbye but we need to press on. We've got a long journey ahead of us." Christian began to walk away with Ryomaru following. Ryomaru yelled back into the Chapel. "GOOODBYE EVERYONE SORRY I COULDN'T STAY LONGER" and with a cheerful wave he made his exit. From seemingly nowhere Tora and Shiro appeared once again. "Don't worry Ryomaru. We'll be seeing you again." Said Tora smiling. Through a side doorway entered Ryu battered and bruised. "You lost huh." Said Tora. "Badly. I'll fight harder next time." "Hey big brother you weren't going to really make me kill Ryomaru were you? He seems like a nice kid." "It's called a bluff. Something you should know very well. After all you pulled off that illusion very well." "Yeah I thought I was gonna crack. Making myself look like a grown up was no problem but making the baby look real and feel like he was there to Christian was hard." "You're tallents as a psion have certainly come a long way." "Speaking of which should I contact Malus and tell him what happened?" Ryu looked down with dissapointment before answering. "Go ahead. And tell him to stop the storm it's disturbing little Shiro." Tora nodded and and closed her eyes in concentration for a moment. After she was done she opened her eyes and delivered the reply to Ryu. "He said stop using the Kagehameha. He says it's too wasteful. And he said not to fight Christian again untill you learn a new move." "Fair enough but what about the storm?" Ryu asked. "He said he didn't create a storm here. At least not delliberately." Ryu's face took an expression of shock. "But it felt just like one of his." Tora nodded in agreeance with Ryu. "True but he said he didnt' make it." Shiro whom had been silent untill this point in the conversation spoke as he stared out the window. "Teacher didn't make it. Those are God's tears." -------------------------------------------------------------------------
